- You might be liable, but you might not. What your really need is a good attorney who deals with probate stuff. If worse comes to worse, just ignore them -- they have to go away after 7 years anyway. (although it's really hard on your credit if you do, it isn't the end of the world.)
- if you were legally married to him at the time, with no legal seperation filed, you are absolutely responsible for the bill. you might want to talk to an attorney to help you get the bill lowered, but there is no question that you are responsible for it. and depending on how high the bill is, it may not go away in 7 years. if you buy a house in 5 years, they'll put a lien on it. they'll garnish your wages, they'll take your income tax return, etc. high medical bills are nothing to mess with. if they're small, 3000<, it's a different story.
- If he had an estate (home) or vehicle it was half his so his medical bills need to be paid from that. That said you can often write a hardship letter to each person or place that is owed and they may write off some or all of the amount owed.
- Go talk to them. Some hospitals will forgive debt if you are in hardship. If that don't work send them $10.00 a month.
